An OCXO is an “Oven Controlled Crystal Oscillator”, which is a kind of crystal oscillator that has higher frequency stability. OCXOs might be more expensive and larger than other types of crystal oscillators, but the precision of their frequency signal is substantially greater. OCXOs work by heating the crystal beyond a temperature which it would normally encounter, thus helping to maintain the temperature of the crystal at a constant level. The result is much better frequency stability, which is needed for controlling radio transmitter frequency, cell towers, and military communications equipment.
